TEHACHAPI, Calif. — As people feel the economic pinch, many families are trying to minimize expenses, and for local rescues like S.T.O.P. that means more abandoned and surrendered dogs. Some pets were found wandering the streets, others near the railroad tracks, and some just simply surrendered by the owners, but no matter how they got to the rescue, S.T.O.P said it has seen a huge increase in abandoned dogs. S.T.O.P foster Chelley Kitzmiller said, “We are finding more and more dogs dropped off here in Tehachapi on the streets, in vacant lots, left at people’s home when they move out, under houses because they have been dumped in certain areas. That’s happening a lot more since we got started.”

<>The economy that is forcing so many people to get rid of their pets is also affecting S.T.O.P. and their foster families. Kitzmiller said, “Finding a foster family is like finding gold. And we desperately need more foster families. We only have eight. And right now we have 40 animals in our system among those eight foster homes, so you can imagine how many animals everyone has.” The group said they will never give up trying to find these furry little friends what they call forever homes because they know the perfect family is out there waiting. Mary Beth Garrison adopted a dog from S.T.O.P., and she said, “They’re looking for forever homes. They are looking for people who will take that dog and just make it part of the family, and that’s what we’ve done. And I think that is incredible that they provide that tool, that mechanism if you will.” S.T.O.P. said although donations and people wanting to foster pets is down, adoptions are up. You can find more information on their Web site at www.TheStoppers.org.View Video

Bakersfield News – turnto23.com —– View Video

TEHACHAPI, Calif. — “Josh is sort of a Robin Hood, a modern day Robin Hood,” said Chelley Kitzmiller, a foster with Save Tehachapi’s Orphaned Pets. On Saturday, Josh brought over 6,000 pounds of dog and cat food to Tehacahpi for local rescues and fosters. He also brought dog treats, leashes and collars to help the rescues out.

<>Kitzmiller said, “It’s such a bounty that you just think, well that can’t really happen, but it happened and it’s an amazing amount of food and this will last all these rescues quite a while.” Pasewaldt owns a feed supply store in Ventura County, and said when he heard that nearly half of all Kern County shelter animals are euthanized, he knew he had to do something to help. Pasewaldt said, “Not enough people are coming to help you guys, and so I just thought I could be some help.” And for the rescues feeling the economic pinch, Pasewaldt’s food donation couldn’t come at a better time. Dawn Callahan is with the group Doberman Pinscher S.O.S. and said they go through at least one 40-pound bag of dog food everyday. “The more free donations we get, the more room we can create, the more we can spend our money on things like the vet and advertising. So, this food will actually equate into us being able to save more animals, and that is the point of this,” said Callahan. Not only does Pasewaldt donate tons of food to local rescues, but nearly every week he makes the drive to Kern County to save animals from being killed in the shelters. Kitzmiller said, “The amount of dogs he saves from Kern County, it saves Kern County a ton of money for euthanasia, for food, for upkeep on the dogs, and it saves lives.” Since March 2007, Pasewaldt has rescued and adopted out over 2,100 animals from his feed store in Newbury Park. But not everyone is happy with his no screening adoption process, but Pasewaldt said he is not worried. “These dogs were going to be in harm’s way, they were going to die. To do a home inspection to me, to do a credit check, to do a background check, it’s death or you. I don’t think that’s something I need to investigate,” he said. Pasewaldt said he will continue saving animals from Kern County shelters and also donating food to rescues in an effort to saves as many animals as possible.

There I sat, alone and afraid,

You got a call and came right to my aid.

You bundled me up with blankets and love.

And, when I needed it most, you gave me a hug.

I learned that the world was not all that scary and cold.

That sometimes there is someone to have and to hold.

You taught me what love is, you helped me to mend.

You loved me and healed me and became my first friend.

And just when I thought you’d done all you do,

There came along not one new lesson, but two.

First you said, “Sweetheart, you’re ready to go.

I’ve done all I can, and you’ve learned all I know.”

Then you bundled me up with a blanket and kiss.

Along came a new family, they even have kids!

They took me to their home, forever to stay.

At first I thought you sent me away.

Then that second lesson became perfectly clear.

No matter how far, you will always be near.

And so, Foster Mom, you know I’ve moved on.

I have a new home, with toys and a lawn.

But I’ll never forget what I learned that first day.

You never really give your fosters away.

You gave me these thoughts to remember you by.

We may never meet again, and now I know why.

You’ll remember I lived with you for a time.

I may not be yours, but you’ll always be mine.
